troubleshooting guide

Shopify products not ranking on Google? Here is how to find out why.

A product can fail to rank for 15 different reasons, and they split into three kinds: Google does not have the page, Google has it but ranks others ahead, or it ranks somewhere you are not looking. Search Console tells you which kind in one minute. Then this guide gives the fix.

start here

First, ask Search Console what it sees.

Open Google Search Console. Paste the product URL into URL Inspection at the top. No Search Console yet? Search Google for site:yourstore.com/products/your-handle instead, then set up Search Console. It is free and every check below uses it.

A

URL is not on Google?

Google does not have the page. Go to Not indexed.

B

On Google, but no impressions?

Open Performance and filter by the page. Almost nothing? Go to Indexed but not ranking.

C

Impressions, but buried?

Average position past 20, brand-name queries only, or nothing in Images or other countries. Go to Ranking but buried.

not indexed

Google does not have the page

Start here if URL Inspection says the URL is not on Google. Nothing about titles or content matters until Google can see the page.

Fillwell tells you if the store password is still on and lists products in no collection. The rest of this group it cannot see. All four are store settings, and each takes a minute to change.

1

The store password page is still on

How to tell

Open the product URL in a private browser window. You see a password box instead of the product. URL Inspection says the URL is not on Google.

How to fix it

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store, Preferences, and turn off Password protection.
  2. If you cannot turn it off, your store is still on a trial or a paused plan. Pick a plan first.
  3. After it is off, use URL Inspection in Search Console and click Request indexing on a few key products.

Fillwell tells you when the storefront password is still on. Turning it off is a setting in Shopify.

2

A noindex tag from your theme or an app

How to tell

URL Inspection says Excluded by noindex tag. View the page source and search for the word noindex.

How to fix it

  1. Check any SEO app you have installed. Most have a Hide from search engines switch per product or per collection. Turn it off for the product.
  2. Check the product in Shopify admin for a metafield or tag your theme uses to hide pages. Themes sometimes hide products tagged hidden.
  3. If it is in theme.liquid itself, edit the theme and remove the noindex meta tag, or ask your theme developer to.
3

The product is a Draft or is not on the Online Store channel

How to tell

The product URL shows a 404 page. In Shopify admin the product status is Draft, or Online Store is unchecked under Sales channels.

How to fix it

  1. Open the product in Shopify admin. Set the status to Active.
  2. Under Sales channels, click Manage and tick Online Store.
  3. Check the Publish date is not set in the future.
4

No page on your store links to the product

How to tell

The product is not in any collection that appears in your menu. URL Inspection says Discovered, currently not indexed, or Crawled, currently not indexed.

How to fix it

  1. Add the product to at least one collection, and make sure that collection is linked from your main menu or footer.
  2. Link to it from a related product, a blog post, or your home page. Google gives more weight to pages with links.
  3. Submit your sitemap in Search Console. Shopify builds it for you at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml.
Fillwell reports this

Fillwell lists every product that is in no collection. Adding them to a collection is yours to do.

5

The store is new and Google has not reached it yet

How to tell

The store is less than two months old. You have no Search Console property, or it shows almost no pages.

How to fix it

  1. Add your store to Google Search Console and verify it. This is free and is where every check in this guide lives.
  2. Submit yourstore.com/sitemap.xml under Sitemaps.
  3. Use URL Inspection on your home page and top products and click Request indexing.
  4. Give it two to four weeks. New stores are crawled slowly until Google finds links to them.

indexed but not ranking

Google has the page but ranks other stores ahead of you

Start here if the URL is on Google but the Performance report shows almost no impressions for it. Google read the page and decided others answer the search better. Most of the time the page does not have enough of the right words.

Three of the seven causes here are missing words on the product. Fillwell finds those products and writes the words from your own product data. It also sets missing categories and reports heavy product pages.

6

Default or duplicate search titles and descriptions

How to tell

In search results your products read Product name, Store name, all the same shape. The Search engine listing section on the product is blank, so Shopify uses the product title and the first lines of the description. Performance shows impressions but very few clicks.

How to fix it

  1. On each product, open Search engine listing and write a page title: brand, product type, and the detail people search. Keep it near 60 characters. Acme Organic Cotton Crewneck T-Shirt, Navy.
  2. Write a meta description that says what the product is, who it is for, and one reason to pick it. About 150 characters.
  3. Make every title different. Two products with the same title compete with each other.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product still using the default search title or summary and writes both from the product's own title, description, and details. You approve them in batches.

7

No description, or the maker's description shared by other stores

How to tell

The Description box is empty, or you pasted the supplier's text. Paste one sentence of it into Google in quotes. If other stores come up, Google sees your page as a copy.

How to fix it

  1. Write your own description. Say what the product is, what it is made of, who it is for, and how to use or care for it.
  2. Use the words a shopper would type. If people search linen summer dress, say linen summer dress.
  3. Aim for a few short paragraphs. One line is not enough for Google to know what the page is about.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product with an empty or thin description and writes an original one from the product's title and details. A copied description you replace by hand. Nothing publishes until you approve it.

8

Thin product details, so long-tail searches never match

How to tell

The page has a title, a price, and a line or two. Searches like waterproof canvas tote with zipper or 100% merino wool socks never show it, because those words are not on the page.

How to fix it

  1. Set a product category in Shopify, then fill the details it shows for that category: material, color, size, fit, age group, and so on.
  2. Make sure your theme shows those details on the page. Most themes show them in a specs block or in the description.
  3. Add the details to the description too, in sentences. That is what Google reads first.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product with blank category details and fills them from the product's own text. Those details become the words that match long-tail searches.

See how it fills product details →
9

No product category

How to tell

The Category field on the product is empty. Breadcrumbs on the page are missing or say Products.

How to fix it

  1. Set a Shopify product category on every product. Pick the deepest one that fits.
  2. Check that your theme shows breadcrumbs and product schema. Most current themes do.
  3. Expect a small effect on regular search. On Google Shopping the category decides which details are required. For Shopping, see the Google Shopping guide.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product with no category and proposes one from the product's own text. You approve them in batches. It helps regular search a little, so it is not the first thing to fix for ranking.

10

Duplicate URLs for the same product

How to tell

URL Inspection says Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user. The same product lives at /collections/sale/products/blue-tee and /products/blue-tee, and both got indexed.

How to fix it

  1. Shopify themes set a canonical tag to the /products/ URL by default. Check the page source for rel=canonical pointing to /products/your-handle.
  2. If your theme is old or edited, restore the canonical_url line in theme.liquid, or ask your theme developer to.
  3. Link to /products/ URLs from your own content, not /collections/.../products/ URLs.
11

A slow theme or too many apps

How to tell

Run the product URL through PageSpeed Insights. The mobile score is under 50. In Search Console, Core Web Vitals lists Poor URLs.

How to fix it

  1. Uninstall apps you do not use. Many leave scripts behind, so also remove leftover code in the theme.
  2. Compress product images and stop uploading 5,000 pixel photos when 2,000 is plenty.
  3. If the theme is years old, a current Shopify theme is usually faster than patching the old one.
Fillwell reports this

Fillwell flags product pages over 1 MB, and images over 64 megapixels or 16MB. It does not change your theme, apps, or images.

Missing from Google Shopping too? That is a different set of causes. Read Shopify products not showing on Google Shopping.

ranking but buried

It ranks, just not where you are looking

Start here if Performance shows impressions but the average position is past 20, or you only show up for your own brand name, or you never show up in Google Images or in another country.

Two of the three causes here are missing words again: alt text and translations. Fillwell covers both, and rewrites titles that break Google's rules.

13

Your products are missing from Google Images

How to tell

In Performance, set Search type to Image. Almost nothing. Your image files are named IMG_4021.jpg and the alt text on each photo is blank.

How to fix it

  1. Write alt text for every product image that says what the photo shows: navy organic cotton crewneck t-shirt, front view.
  2. Name image files for the product before you upload them.
  3. Use large, clear images. Google Images favors big, sharp photos.
  4. Know what alt text does and does not do. It puts your photos in image search and gives AI assistants words for your pictures. It does not lift the product page itself by much.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every image with no alt text and writes it from the photo and the product. You approve them in batches. Google uses alt text to understand a photo, which helps it appear in Google Images.

See how it writes alt text →
14

You only rank in one language or one country

How to tell

In Performance, filter by Country. You sell to France and Germany but get no impressions there. Your product pages are English only, or the translations are half done.

How to fix it

  1. Set up Shopify Markets for each country you sell to. Shopify adds the hreflang tags for you.
  2. Translate the product title, description, search title, and meta description for each language. A translated title with an English description does not rank.
  3. Translate the details and alt text too. They are words Google matches in that language.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product whose description is not translated and fills it in each language you sell in, from the original. You approve before anything goes live.

See how it handles translations →
15

Titles that repeat across products or are stuffed with keywords

How to tell

Forty products titled Blue T-Shirt with only the size different, so Google shows one and hides the rest. Or titles like Best Cheap Blue T-Shirt Buy Now Free Shipping.

How to fix it

  1. Sell one product with variants on one page, not one page per size or color.
  2. Write titles the way a person would say them: brand, product, the one or two details that matter.
  3. Take sale words and repeated keywords out of titles. Google reads that as spam and shoppers skip it.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell flags titles with promotional words, keyword stuffing, and the other things Google asks you to avoid, and writes a new title for each one. You approve each title before it saves. Rewrites use AI credits.

the word problems

Five of the fifteen are missing words. Fillwell writes those.

Indexing, speed, duplicate URLs, and links you fix once. Default titles, empty descriptions, blank details, missing alt text, and missing translations come back with every product you add. That is the part Fillwell keeps clean.

good to know

Common questions

How do I check whether Google has indexed my product?

Search Google for site:yourstore.com/products/your-handle. If nothing comes back, it is not indexed. For the full reason, paste the URL into URL Inspection in Google Search Console. It tells you whether the page is on Google and, if not, why.

How long does it take for a new Shopify product to rank?

Indexing takes days to a few weeks. Ranking for searches beyond your brand name takes months, and depends on how many other stores sell the same thing and how much of the right text your page has. New stores with no links take the longest.

Does Shopify do SEO for me?

Shopify handles the plumbing: sitemap.xml, robots.txt, canonical tags, hreflang for markets, and fields for search title and meta description. It does not write the words. Empty fields ship empty.

Do I need an SEO app?

Usually not. Nearly everything in this guide is a field in Shopify admin or a setting in Search Console. An app helps when you have hundreds of products and need to fill the fields at scale. That is what Fillwell does.

Does alt text help my product page rank?

Barely. Alt text is how Google and AI assistants know what a photo shows. It puts your images in Google Images and gives chatbots words for your pictures. It will not move the product page up in regular results by much. Titles, descriptions, and details do that.

Which of these does Fillwell fix?

The five word problems: default search titles and summaries, missing descriptions, blank product details, missing alt text, and missing translations. It also sets missing categories and rewrites titles that break Google's rules. It reports a store password that is still on, products in no collection, products that share a title, and heavy product pages, but it does not fix indexing, page speed, duplicate URLs, or links. Those are settings and outreach, and the steps above show you how.

  • It skips when unsure. It never guesses into your live store.
  • You can undo anything. One row, one page, or all of it, for 30 days.
