not synced

The product never reached Google

Start here if the product is not in Merchant Center at all. Nothing downstream can work until it is.

1

The product is not published to the Google & YouTube channel

How to tell

In Shopify admin, open the product. Under Sales channels on the right, Google & YouTube is unchecked or missing. In Merchant Center, the product does not appear under Products.

How to fix it

  1. Open the product in Shopify admin. Click Manage next to Sales channels and tick Google & YouTube.
  2. To do many at once: Products, select all, More actions, Add to sales channels, pick Google & YouTube.
  3. Check the product status is Active, not Draft or Archived. Drafts never sync.
2

The feed is still syncing or still under review

How to tell

The product shows in the Google & YouTube app in Shopify as Pending, or in Merchant Center as Pending or Under review. You added or changed it in the last few days.

How to fix it

  1. Wait. Google says a review takes up to 3 to 5 business days for Shopping ads. Free listings can take a few weeks.
  2. If it stays Pending for more than 5 business days, open the Google & YouTube app in Shopify and check the Products tab for an error next to it.
  3. Do not delete and re-add the product to speed it up. That restarts the clock.
3

The product is not sold in the country Google is targeting

How to tell

Merchant Center shows the product as not available for the target country, or you see Missing shipping or Unavailable in target country.

How to fix it

  1. In the Google & YouTube app in Shopify, open Settings and check the target market. It must be a market your store sells to.
  2. In Shopify Settings, Shipping and delivery, make sure a shipping rate covers that country.
  3. In Merchant Center, Shipping and returns, confirm a shipping service exists for that country and currency.

disapproved

Google has the product but will not show it

Start here if Merchant Center lists the product as Not approved or Disapproved. Click the product in Merchant Center. The issue name tells you which cause below applies.

4

Missing or wrong product identifiers (GTIN, brand, MPN)

How to tell

Merchant Center says Invalid value [gtin], Missing value [gtin], Limited performance due to missing identifiers, or Incorrect product identifier.

How to fix it

  1. For products with a barcode, put it in the Barcode field on each Shopify variant. Use the real UPC, EAN, or ISBN. Never make one up.
  2. Set the Vendor field on the product. Google reads it as the brand.
  3. If you make the product yourself and it has no barcode, mark it as a custom product in the Google & YouTube app so Google stops asking for one.
5

Price or availability does not match your product page

How to tell

Merchant Center says Mismatched value (page crawl) for price or availability, or Automatic item updates keeps changing your price.

How to fix it

  1. Open the product page as a shopper in the target country. The price on the page must equal the price in the feed, in the same currency.
  2. Check for sale prices, Compare at prices, and Shopify Markets price rules. Any of these can make the page price differ from the synced price.
  3. Check stock too. A sold out product must show as sold out on the page, and the feed must say out of stock.
  4. In Merchant Center, turn on Automatic item updates for price and availability so small drifts fix themselves.
Fillwell reports this

Fillwell lists every product that is sold out but still published, and flags product pages where the price in the page's structured data differs from the product's price. You fix them in Shopify.

6

Missing product details, or a wrong category

How to tell

Merchant Center says Missing value [color], Missing value [size], Missing value [age_group], or Missing value [gender]. Apparel products are hit hardest.

How to fix it

  1. Set a Product category on every product in Shopify. Google guesses a category on its own when you leave it blank, and it can guess wrong. The category decides which details are required.
  2. Fill the category details Shopify shows once you pick a category: color, size, material, age group, gender. Google reads these fields.
  3. Apparel and accessories need color, age group, and gender. Clothing and shoes also need size. Google lists these as required, not suggested.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product with a missing category or blank detail, fills them from your own product text, and you approve them in batches.

A policy problem with your titles, images, or site

How to tell

Merchant Center says Promotional overlay on image, Promotional text in title, Misrepresentation, Missing return policy, or your whole account is suspended.

How to fix it

  1. Take promotional text out of product titles: Free shipping, Sale, Best price, prices, sale dates, delivery dates, and your store name. Turn off all caps.
  2. Remove text, badges, logos, and watermarks from product photos. Use a plain product shot on a clean background.
  3. Add a return policy that states the time frame, the method, and any fees. If you do not accept returns, say so clearly. Show at least one way to contact you: an address, a phone number, an email, a contact form, or a social business profile.
  4. In Merchant Center, fill in Business information so it matches your store.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell flags titles with promotional words, prices, sale dates, or your store name, and writes a new title for each one. You approve each title before it saves. Rewrites use AI credits.

Google cannot load the product page

How to tell

Merchant Center says Page not found, Unavailable desktop landing page, Unavailable mobile landing page, or Crawl error.

How to fix it

  1. Open the product URL in a private browser window. It must load with no password and no redirect to another product.
  2. If your store has a password page turned on, turn it off. Google cannot get past it.
  3. Check Shopify Online store, Preferences, that you are not blocking search engines.
  4. Remove any app or theme code that blocks bots. Google's crawler must be able to read the page.
Fillwell reports this

Fillwell tells you when the storefront password is still on, and flags product pages that only load by script or that redirect by script. You fix them in Shopify.

Shipping is not set up in Merchant Center

How to tell

Merchant Center says Missing shipping information.

How to fix it

  1. In Merchant Center, open Shipping and returns and add at least one shipping service for each target country.
  2. Google no longer asks US stores for sales tax settings. For the US and Canada, leave tax out of the price.
  3. If you use the Google & YouTube app, let it sync shipping from Shopify. Then check it landed in Merchant Center.

approved but hidden

Approved, but still not showing up

Start here if the product is Approved in Merchant Center and you still cannot find it. Approval means Google can show it. It does not mean Google will.

10

You expect ads, but you only have free listings

How to tell

Your products are approved. You search for them and see nothing at the top of Google. You have never set up a Google Ads campaign, or the campaign is paused or out of budget.

How to fix it

  1. Free listings show in the Shopping tab and sometimes on the main results page. They are not the same as Shopping ads at the top.
  2. To run ads, link Google Ads to Merchant Center and start a Performance Max or Shopping campaign with a daily budget.
  3. Check the campaign is Enabled and has a budget left for the day.
11

Weak titles and descriptions give Google nothing to match

How to tell

The product is approved. It only shows up when someone searches your brand name. The title is the default Shopify title like Blue Tee or Mug 12oz with no brand, type, or details.

How to fix it

  1. Rewrite the title as brand, product type, and the details a shopper would search: Acme Organic Cotton T-Shirt, Navy, Men's Large.
  2. Put the most important words first. Google shows about 70 characters.
  3. Write a description that says what the product is, what it is made of, and who it is for. Google reads it to match searches.
  4. Fill the search title and summary too. Google uses them when it shows your page in regular results.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell writes the SEO title and the search summary for every product that still has the default, from your own product data, and you approve them in batches before they go live. It also writes a description for every product that has none, or one under 30 words.

Images are too small, generic, or shared across products

How to tell

Merchant Center says Image too small, Generic image, or Limited performance due to image quality. Or your products are approved but rarely clicked.

How to fix it

  1. Use images at least 500 by 500 pixels. That becomes Google's minimum on January 31, 2027. Until then the floor is 100 by 100, or 250 by 250 for clothing. Google recommends 1500 by 1500 or more. Stay under 64 megapixels and 16MB.
  2. Give each variant its own image. One photo shared by 20 products looks like a placeholder to Google.
  3. Show the product on a plain white or light background. No text, no logos, no watermarks.
Fillwell reports this

Fillwell lists products with no image, products with a single image, and images under 500 pixels, over 64 megapixels, or over 16MB. It does not edit images.

13

Your product is being outranked

How to tell

Everything is approved and clean. You still do not see your product for broad searches, but you do see it for exact product names.

How to fix it

  1. Check your price. Google shows shoppers the best deals first. A higher price than the same item elsewhere pushes you down.
  2. Add ratings and reviews. Turn on product ratings in Merchant Center and use an app that sends reviews to Google. Ratings only show once you have at least 50 reviews across your products.
  3. Keep improving titles, details, and images. Google ranks products it can understand and trust.
Fillwell reports this

Fillwell flags product pages whose review stars are missing from the structured data Google reads. You fix that in your reviews app or theme.

one missing product

  • Is the product Active and added to the Google & YouTube channel?
  • Does Merchant Center show it as Approved?
  • Does every variant have a real barcode, or is it marked as custom?
  • Does the page price match the feed price, in the same currency?
  • Does the product have a category and its details filled in?
  • Are titles free of sale words and all caps?
  • Do images show only the product, at 500 by 500 or more?
  • Is shipping set up for every target country?
  • If you want ads, is a campaign running with budget?

good to know

Common questions

How do I see why Google rejected a product?

Sign in to Merchant Center and open Products. Click Needs attention. Each product lists its issue by name. The same issues show in the Google & YouTube app in Shopify under Products. Match the issue name to the causes above.

How long does it take for products to show after I fix them?

Google says its review after a fix can take 3 to 5 business days. A first review takes up to 3 to 5 business days for Shopping ads and can take a few weeks for free listings.

What is the difference between free listings and Shopping ads?

Free listings show in Google's Shopping tab and sometimes in regular results at no cost. Shopping ads are the product tiles at the top of the results page. Ads need a Google Ads account, a campaign, and a budget. Both need an approved product in Merchant Center.

Do I need a GTIN for every product?

If the product has a barcode from its maker, yes. Google checks it. If you make the product yourself and it has no barcode, mark it as a custom product and leave the barcode blank. Never type in a made-up barcode. That can get the product disapproved.

Why are my apparel products the ones that fail?

Google requires color, age group, and gender for apparel and accessories, and size for clothing and shoes. Most stores leave these blank in Shopify. Set the product category in Shopify, then fill the details it shows for that category.

Can Fillwell fix Merchant Center errors?

It fixes the data ones: missing categories, blank product details, default SEO titles and missing search summaries, and titles with promotional text. It reports others without changing them: image problems, sold out products still published, a storefront password, a missing return policy. It does not touch shipping or Google Ads settings. Those you fix in Merchant Center and Shopify using the steps above.

Google's own rules, if you want the source: product data specification, Google product category, Shopping ads policies, Misrepresentation, image requirements, contact information, and product status and review times.
