troubleshooting guide

Shopify filters not working? Here is how to fix them.

Broken filters come in three shapes: no filters at all, a filter that never appears, or filters that quietly drop products a shopper should see. The first is setup, the second is configuration, the third is your product data. This guide walks all three, in that order.

start here

First, name the symptom.

Open a collection page on your storefront as a shopper. What you see there tells you which group to read.

A

No filters anywhere?

Setup problem. App, theme, or a conflict. Go to No filters at all.

B

A filter missing from the list?

Configuration or an empty field. Go to A filter is missing.

C

Products missing when you filter?

Data problem. Blank or messy fields. Go to Products drop out.

no filters at all

Collection pages show no filters

Start here if there is no filter sidebar or filter bar anywhere on your store. This is setup, not data. Three things have to be true: the Search & Discovery app has filters, the theme supports filtering, and the section has it turned on.

Fillwell does not help with this group. These are app and theme settings, each a few clicks.

1

No filters set up in Search & Discovery

How to tell

Shopify's free Search & Discovery app is not installed, or it is installed but the Filters page in it is empty. Filters cannot exist without it on a current theme.

How to fix it

  1. Install Search & Discovery from the Shopify App Store. It is free and made by Shopify.
  2. In the app, open Filters and add the ones shoppers need: availability, price, color, size, product type, vendor.
  3. Save. Filters apply to collection pages and search results together.
2

The theme does not support storefront filtering, or it is switched off

How to tell

Search & Discovery has filters, but collection pages show nothing. The theme is old (vintage, pre Online Store 2.0), or the collection section has filtering unchecked.

How to fix it

  1. Open Online Store, Customize, and go to a collection page. Select the collection section and look for an Enable filtering checkbox. Tick it.
  2. If there is no such setting, the theme predates storefront filtering. Update it to the current version, or switch to a current theme like Dawn.
  3. Old themes filter by tag links instead. That still works, but it is a different system with its own rules. See cause 10.
3

A third-party search app replaced the theme's filters

How to tell

You have a search-and-filter app installed (Boost, Searchanise, Algolia, and similar). Its filter tree renders instead of Shopify's, or the two fight and neither shows.

How to fix it

  1. Pick one system. If you keep the app, configure filters inside the app, and Search & Discovery settings will not apply.
  2. If you uninstall the app, also remove its leftover theme code. Most of these apps edit the collection template, and the leftovers keep suppressing Shopify's filters.

a filter is missing

Filters show, but not the one you want

Start here if filtering works but a specific filter never appears: no Color filter, no Material filter, a metafield that refuses to show up. The filter list is built in Search & Discovery from your product data, and both halves have to cooperate.

One cause here is data: a filter hides itself when no product in the collection has a value. Fillwell fills those values.

4

The filter was never added in Search & Discovery

How to tell

The field exists on products, but the Filters page in Search & Discovery does not list it.

How to fix it

  1. In Search & Discovery, open Filters, click Add filter, and pick the source: variant option, product type, vendor, category attribute, or metafield.
  2. Rename the label if the raw name is ugly. Shoppers see the label, not the field name.
5

The metafield cannot be a filter

How to tell

Your metafield does not appear in the Add filter list at all.

How to fix it

  1. Give the metafield a definition: Settings, Custom data, Products. Filters only see defined metafields.
  2. Check the type. Filters support single line text, list of text, integer, decimal, true or false, and metaobject references. Rich text, JSON, dates, and file metafields cannot be filters.
  3. If the value is a comma-separated string in one text field, split it into a list of text. Filters read list entries, not commas.
6

No product in the collection has a value, so the filter hides

How to tell

The filter shows on some collections and not others. On the missing ones, every product has that field blank, so Shopify hides the filter rather than show an empty list.

How to fix it

  1. Open the collection and check the field on its products. Blank across the board means no filter.
  2. Fill the field on the products in that collection. The filter appears on its own once values exist.
Fillwell fixes this

Fillwell finds every product with blank category details like color, size, and material, and fills them from the product's own text. Filters that were hiding for lack of values show up once the values exist. You approve them in batches.

You hit the 25-filter cap

How to tell

Adding a new filter in Search & Discovery fails or the button is gone. Shopify allows at most 25 filters per store.

How to fix it

  1. Remove filters shoppers do not use. Fewer, well-filled filters beat a long half-empty list.
  2. Merge near-duplicates: one Material filter beats separate Fabric and Material metafields.

products drop out

Filters work, but products are missing from the results

Start here if the filter is there, a shopper uses it, and products that should match are not in the results. Filtering is exact: a product is only in the Blue results if its data says Blue. Filters combine with AND, values within one filter with OR, and a blank field matches nothing.

Two of the four causes here are empty or messy fields, and that is what Fillwell fixes. The other two are an old theme and a short wait.

8

The field is empty, so the product drops out of every filtered view

How to tell

A blue shirt is missing from the Blue results. On the product, the color option or metafield is blank. The product is fine unfiltered and invisible the moment anyone filters.

How to fix it

  1. Fill the fields your filters read, on every product: variant options, category details, filterable metafields.
  2. Set the product category first. Shopify then shows the right detail fields (color, size, material) to fill.
  3. Remember both halves of the rule: blank never matches, and shoppers who filter never see the product.
Fillwell fixes this

This is the core Fillwell fix. The free scan in the app counts every product with blank details, AI fills them from the product's own text, and you approve them in batches. Filtered views stop losing products.

Messy values split one filter into many

How to tell

The Color filter lists Blue, blue, Navy Blue, and NAVY as separate choices, each matching a slice of your catalog. Shoppers pick one and miss the rest.

How to fix it

  1. Pick one spelling per value and apply it everywhere. Blue, not blue. Navy, not NAVY.
  2. Keep values short and reusable. Long one-off values like Blue with white stripes make one-product filters.
Fillwell fixes this

For vendors and tags, Fillwell's checks group the spellings and merge each set to the one you pick, with undo. A merge of up to 25 products is free. For product types and metafield values, a bulk edit on a paid plan sets one value across the set. Choosing the naming scheme is still your call.

Read the guide to duplicate vendors and tags →

Variant option values, like the Color option in the example above, are not something Fillwell edits. Fix those in your admin, one product at a time or with the admin bulk editor.

10

Tag-based filtering on an old theme misses on exact match

How to tell

The theme filters by tag links, and clicking a tag link shows fewer products than it should. A stray hyphen or space makes a different tag, so blue and blue- are two tags.

How to fix it

  1. Make tags exact and consistent across products. Shopify treats capitals as the same tag, but not hyphens or spaces.
  2. Better: update to a current theme and use storefront filtering. Tag filtering is the legacy system and Shopify recommends storefront filters.

Fillwell's tag check clears the spellings. The theme change is yours.

11

The change has not synced yet

How to tell

You just added a filter or fixed product data, and the storefront still shows the old state.

How to fix it

  1. Give it a few minutes. Filter and product changes go through Shopify's index before the storefront updates.
  2. Check in a private window. Your browser may be caching the old page.

For clothing, the same blank color, size, gender or age group can also get a product disapproved on Google Shopping. Read Shopify products not showing on Google Shopping. For values split by spelling, read the same vendor or tag listed twice.

the data causes

Setup you fix once. Blank fields come back with every product.

App, theme, and metafield settings stay fixed. The data causes return with every product you add: a blank color here, a lowercase value there, and filtered views quietly shrink. That is the part Fillwell keeps clean.

The scan finds the gaps

Free, inside the app. It counts every product with a missing category or blank details, the fields your filters read.

2

your filters

  • Is Search & Discovery installed, with filters added?
  • Does the theme support filtering, and is it enabled on the collection section?
  • Is any third-party filter app fighting the theme?
  • Does every filterable metafield have a definition and a plain type?
  • Does every product have a category set?
  • Are color, size, material, and the other details filled on every product?
  • Are values spelled one way everywhere?
  • Did you wait a few minutes after the last change?

good to know

Common questions

Do I need an app for Shopify filters?

Only Shopify's own free Search & Discovery app. It defines the filters, and any current theme renders them on collection pages and search results. Third-party filter apps are optional extras, not a requirement.

Why does a filter show on one collection but not another?

A filter only renders when at least one product in the current collection has a value for it. If every product in the collection has the field blank, Shopify hides the filter there. Fill the values and it appears.

Which metafield types can be filters?

Single line text, list of single line text, integer, decimal, true or false, and metaobject references. The metafield also needs a definition under Settings, Custom data. Rich text, JSON, dates, and file metafields cannot be filters.

How do filters combine when a shopper picks several?

Different filters combine with AND, values inside one filter combine with OR. Blue plus Large means blue AND large. Blue plus Red inside the Color filter means blue OR red. A product with a blank field never matches that filter at all.

Do storefront filters affect Google?

No, they only run on your own store. But they read the same fields Google Shopping reads: category, color, size, material. Fill them once and both improve. For the Google side, read the Google Shopping guide.

Which of these does Fillwell fix?

The data causes: blank category details that make products drop out of filtered views or keep a filter hidden, and bulk cleanup of messy values. App setup, theme support, metafield definitions, and the filter cap are settings, and the steps above cover them.

you're in control

Approve each change, or bulk fill and undo anything.

AI can do this work. It shouldn't do it alone. Fillwell is built that way on purpose.

  • You guide it. Tell it what to do in plain words.
  • It skips when unsure. It never guesses into your live store.
  • You can undo anything. One row, one page, or all of it, for 30 days.

Your store. Your decision.
