the guide
Google Merchant Center for a Shopify store: the complete guide.
Merchant Center is where Google reads your products, for free listings, Shopping ads and now its AI answers. On Shopify the feed builds itself from the product form. This guide is the whole path: what the store needs before it links, which field becomes which attribute, what the review does, Google's own list of what gets products turned down or held back, and how to keep it clean after.
what it is
One feed, three uses.
Merchant Center is Google's product database for stores. Everything Google shows about a product it sells, the price, the stock, the photo, the brand, comes from a feed a merchant submits there. On Shopify the Google & YouTube channel submits it for you, from the product form, and keeps it current.
Where it shows, from Google's own page on the Shopify app: installing the channel opts a store in "to show products from your Shopify store for free on surfaces across Google, such as on the Shopping tab, YouTube, Google Search (.com), Google Images, and Google Lens." Shopping ads sit on top of the same feed and are a separate, paid decision. Since 2025 there is a third use: Google's AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini shopping answers draw on the Shopping Graph, which Merchant Center feeds. Same data, no separate submission.
The line to keep in mind, from the same page: "Your products aren't guaranteed to show across Google, as we rely on the data that you provide to us to then match what customers might be searching for." Approval gets a product in. The data decides whether it is picked.
before it links
Six things the store needs first.
The channel checks these during setup, and Google checks them again during the account review. Missing any one holds every product, so they come before product data.
An online store that is not password protected
Google crawls product pages to check price and stock against the feed. A locked store cannot be checked.
A payment provider
Shopify's requirement for the channel, and Google's for a real store.
A refund policy and terms of service, linked in the footer
Shopify: they "must be available in your footer menu." Missing policies are the top account-level error.
Contact details a shopper can see
At least one of an address, a phone number, an email, a contact form or a social business profile.
Shipping to a supported country, in that country's currency
And shipping rates set, because Google shows a delivered price.
A Merchant Center account on a verified domain
One store, one account. Google: the app "can only initiate a link between a Shopify store and a stand-alone Merchant Center account." No multi-client accounts.
Then the link
Install the Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store, sign in with the Google account that will own the Merchant Center account, and create or connect one. The app verifies and claims the store's domain on its own. Pick the target country and language, confirm shipping, choose where checkout happens, agree to the terms. All products available to the online store sync on the first pass, which can take up to a day. Products you do not want on Google are removed from the channel's availability, one at a time or in bulk.
what syncs
Which Shopify field becomes which Google attribute.
Google's product data specification has a few dozen attributes. The channel fills them from thirteen places in Shopify. Fix the field here, and the feed follows within hours.
| In Shopify | In Merchant Center | Rule | Where it is edited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | title | Required. Plain text, up to 150 characters. No promotional text, no all capitals. | Shopify product |
| Description | description | Required. Up to 5,000 characters, must match the page. Product facts only. | Shopify product |
| Vendor | brand | Required for new products except books, movies and music. Not "N/A" or "Generic". | Shopify product |
| Barcode | gtin | Strongly recommended; required in practice. Checked against the global registry. | Shopify variant |
| Product category | google_product_category | Optional. Google guesses one if you leave it blank. It decides which detail fields are required. Shopify's taxonomy maps to Google's. | Shopify product |
| Product type | product_type | Optional. Google suggests "at least 3 levels" for free listings. | Shopify product |
| Images | image_link, additional_image_link | Required. Minimum 100 by 100 (250 for apparel); 500 by 500 becomes the floor on January 31, 2027. No text, badges or watermarks. | Shopify product |
| Price and compare-at price | price, sale_price | Required. Must match what the page shows in the target country. | Shopify variant |
| Inventory | availability | Required. In stock, out of stock, preorder, backorder. | Shopify variant |
| Variants | item_group_id | Groups variants under one product. Variant option names must be in English to sync. | Shopify variant |
| Options and category details | color, size, material, pattern | Color is required for apparel, and size for clothing and shoes. Material and pattern are needed only when they tell variants apart. Read from options and the category's details. | Shopify product |
| Google fields | age_group, gender, condition, mpn, custom product | Set in the channel's bulk editor. Custom product true tells Google not to expect a barcode. | Google & YouTube channel |
| Weight | shipping_weight | Used when shipping is set by weight. | Shopify variant |
Category, category details, descriptions and image alt text are what Fillwell fills. Vendor spelling and title case are what it checks. The rest is the admin and the channel.
the review
What happens after the sync.
Every product goes through a review. Google's status page: "Reviews may take up to 3-5 business days for Shopping ads and a few weeks for other features (such as free listings)." Each product then carries one of four statuses in the channel and in Merchant Center:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under review | Google is checking the product. This takes up to 3 to 5 business days for Shopping ads and can take a few weeks for free listings. |
| Approved | Showing in free listings and eligible for ads. Google still crawls the page and can pull it later. |
| Limited | A warning. The product shows, with "limited performance," because something is missing: brand, identifier, a detail field. |
| Not approved | A disapproval. The product is out of ads and listings until the item is fixed and re-synced. |
Two clocks run underneath. Google marks product data as needing an update after 30 days, so the channel resyncs everything inside that window; if the app is uninstalled or disconnected, the products lapse. And account-level problems get a 28-day warning before the account is suspended and every product disabled. A failed re-review starts a cool-down during which the Request review button is greyed out, and the cool-downs get longer each time. Fix everything before asking, once.
Account-level errors, misrepresentation, missing policies, missing shipping, are covered one by one in the error dictionary. Everything below is item-level: one product at a time.
google's own list
Nine product data violations, with the fix for each.
This is the list from Google's page on fixing product data quality violations for the Shopify app. Each one names a field on the product form.
Missing or invalid identifiers
Missing IDs (GTIN or MPN and brand) · Invalid value (GTIN) · GTIN not correct length
Google matches products to its catalog by barcode. A wrong, reused or missing one leaves the product unmatched.
Fix. Put the real barcode on each variant. For products you make yourself, set Custom product to true in the channel so Google stops expecting one.
Who fixes it: Shopify admin, the channel. Step by step →
Brand missing
Limited performance due to missing value: brand
Brand comes from the Vendor field. Blank, or a placeholder like Generic, and the product is limited.
Fix. Set the Vendor on every product, spelled one way. Google's page says to "add the brand to your product details within the Vendor field."
Who fixes it: Shopify admin. Fillwell does not check for a blank vendor; it finds vendors spelled more than one way. Step by step →
GTIN and brand conflict
Conflicting values (GTIN, brand)
The barcode belongs to a different brand than the Vendor says. Usually a reseller listing with the manufacturer's barcode and the store's name as vendor.
Fix. Vendor is the maker, not the store. Check the barcode owner in GS1's registry if unsure.
Who fixes it: Shopify admin.
Excessive capitalization
Excessive capitalization in title
All-caps titles read as ad copy. Google treats them as spam-like.
Fix. Sentence or title case. Brand, what it is, then the detail that makes it that one.
Who fixes it: Fillwell's title check finds them; Shopify admin fixes. Step by step →
Generic image
Generic image
The image is a logo, a placeholder or a "no image" card.
Fix. A plain photo of the actual product, one per variant where variants look different.
Who fixes it: Shopify admin. Step by step →
Promotional overlay on image
Promotional overlay on image: image link
A badge, watermark, price or text sits on the photo.
Fix. Upload a clean image. Google's automatic image improvements can strip some overlays if you turn them on in Merchant Center.
Who fixes it: Shopify admin, Merchant Center. Step by step →
Image too small
Image too small
Under 100 by 100 pixels, or 250 by 250 for apparel. In 2027 the floor becomes 500 by 500.
Fix. Upload at 500 by 500 or larger. Google recommends 1500 by 1500.
Who fixes it: Fillwell lists them; Shopify admin fixes. Step by step →
Invalid Google product category
Invalid value (Google product category)
Google got a single word, or a path it does not have. It wants the numeric ID or the full path.
Fix. Set the Shopify product category from the standard taxonomy on every product. The channel maps it to Google's.
Who fixes it: Fillwell fills it. Step by step →
Missing apparel values
Missing value: gender · size · color · age group
Apparel and accessories need color, gender and age group. Clothing and shoes also need size. Use a real color name. For more than one color, use slashes, like Red/Pink/Blue. Keep size in one format across variants.
Fix. Color and size come from variant options or the category's details. Gender and age group are set in the channel's bulk editor.
Who fixes it: Fillwell fills the details; the channel takes gender and age group. Step by step →
Price mismatches, landing page errors and shipping errors are not product data violations by Google's definition. They are in the Google Shopping guide and the error dictionary.
after approval
Six habits that keep the feed clean.
Approval is a moment. Every new product, every renamed vendor and every sale price can put an item back in Needs attention. These keep it out.
The free scan finds thin or missing descriptions, missing alt text on a sample of images, and vendors spelled more than one way on a public store. The in-app scan sees categories and their details too.
- Open Merchant Center's Needs attention once a week. It lists every item error and warning by name; the error dictionary translates them.
- Fix in Shopify, not in Merchant Center. The channel resyncs on every change and overwrites feed edits.
- Turn on automatic item updates for price and availability so small drifts between page and feed fix themselves.
- Set the category first when adding products. It decides which detail fields Google will ask for.
- Keep one spelling of each vendor. Every variant of the name is a separate brand to Google.
- Never leave a sync unattended for a month. Google marks product data as needing an update after 30 days, and can remove products that are not refreshed; the channel refreshes it, but only while the app is installed and connected.
good to know
Common questions
Do I need Google Ads to be in Merchant Center?
No. The Google & YouTube channel opts a store into free listings automatically. Google's page: products "can appear in relevant Google Shopping tab search listings for free," and on Search, Images, Lens and YouTube. Ads are a separate, paid decision on top of the same feed.
How long until products show?
The first sync can take up to a day, then Google reviews new products, up to 3 to 5 business days for Shopping ads and a few weeks for free listings. Changes after that sync within hours. A review request after a fix takes up to 3 to 7 business days.
What is the difference between Limited and Not approved?
Limited is a warning: the product shows, but Google says it will perform worse, usually because brand, an identifier or a detail is missing. Not approved is a disapproval: the product is off Google until fixed. Fix disapprovals first, then warnings.
Why does Google say my price is wrong when it is right?
Google crawls the page as a shopper in the target country and compares it with the feed. Sales, compare-at prices, market pricing and currency rounding all cause a mismatch. Automatic item updates in Merchant Center clear most of these.
Does the channel sync everything?
It syncs what is available to the online store: title, description, vendor, barcode, category, product type, images, price, stock, variants and options. Gender, age group, condition, MPN and Custom product are set in the channel's own bulk editor, not in the product form. Variant option names must be in English.
Does Shopify's product category count as Google's?
Yes. Shopify's standard product taxonomy maps to Google's product category, and the category's details map to Google's attributes. One right category in Shopify serves both, and it is the single field Google's violations page comes back to most.
Where does Fillwell fit?
The product data half. Its scan finds every product with a missing category, blank details, no description or blank alt text, and its fills write them for your approval. Its checks find vendors spelled more than one way and titles in all caps, and it lists images that are too small. It does not check for a blank vendor, and it does not touch identifiers, prices or the channel's own settings.
Does Google's AI read the same feed?
Yes. AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini shopping answers draw on the Shopping Graph, which Merchant Center feeds. A product that is Approved with complete data is eligible; there is no separate AI feed. The AI search guide covers the other assistants.

you're in control
Approve each change, or bulk fill and undo anything.
AI can do this work. It shouldn't do it alone. Fillwell is built that way on purpose.
- You guide it. Tell it what to do in plain words.
- It skips when unsure. It never guesses into your live store.
- You can undo anything. One row, one page, or all of it, for 30 days.
Your store. Your decision.
