AI search optimization for Shopify: what the assistants actually read.

ChatGPT, Copilot, Google's AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity do not browse your store the way a shopper does. They read feeds and fields. This guide is how a Shopify product gets into each of them, what each one reads, what "optimization" means once you know that, and which parts of the sales pitch to ignore.

the three doors

Three feeds carry every product into every assistant.

Shopping answers come from structured feeds first, not from a crawl of your storefront. For a Shopify store two of the three fill themselves.

WhereHow products get inWho ranksWhat it reads
ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, the Shop appShopify Catalog. Eligible products are included automatically; nothing to install. Each agent ranks its own results. Shopify names product data quality, availability, price, shipping and trust signals as inputs.Title, description, category, variants and options, images, price, inventory. A title, one image, a price above zero and a published page to be in it at all.
Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, GeminiMerchant Center, through the Google & YouTube channel, into the Shopping Graph.Google. Free listings are eligible; ads are not required.Google's product data spec: category, brand from Vendor, identifiers, images, apparel attributes, price and availability kept current.
PerplexityIts merchant program, which takes the same Google Shopping feed.Perplexity. Reported requirements at the time of writing include a verified domain and identifier coverage on most products. The same feed fields as Google, so the same product data.

Shopify Catalog

Shopify's structured database of product data from eligible stores. Shopify's help pages say products that meet the requirements are included with no action from the merchant, that the Shop app and "select AI platforms" read it, and that inclusion does not guarantee placement or ranking. Its blog names ChatGPT and Copilot as the largest AI channels using it, and says each agent "decides which products to show and how to rank them, weighing the buyer's request, product data quality, availability, price, shipping, trust signals, and other factors." The instruction to merchants is one sentence: "provide accurate, detailed, and descriptive product information, including titles, descriptions, images, categories, variants, options, prices, and inventory."

Merchant Center

Google's AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini shopping answers draw on the Shopping Graph, which Merchant Center feeds. Shopify's own guide to Google's AI shopping puts it plainly: install the Google & YouTube channel, complete the required and recommended fields, and fix disapprovals. It also gives the line that explains this whole page: "A human shopper can look at a photo and guess that a down jacket is warm; an AI needs the fill power, shell material, and temperature rating explicitly stated."

A Google-spec feed, for Perplexity

Perplexity's merchant program ingests the same Google Shopping product data spec, so a store that is clean in Merchant Center is most of the way there. The program's requirements are Perplexity's to change; the product data underneath is the same.

what optimization means

Seven fields an agent reads.

Once you know the assistants read fields, "AI search optimization" is a list. This is it, with the reason for each.

1. Category

The first thing every door reads, and it decides which detail fields the product has. Shopify's taxonomy maps to Google's, so one right choice serves both.

2. The details

Fill power, shell material, temperature rating. Shopify's own words: a human can guess from a photo that a down jacket is warm; an AI needs it stated. The details are the stated version.

3. Title

What it is, then what makes it that one. Agents match the buyer's words against it. Promo words, capitals and a model number first all hurt, and Google asks you to avoid the first two.

4. Description

Shopify's guidance for Catalog: use it to answer real buying questions, materials, fit, dimensions, care, and put the most important facts early. That is what an assistant quotes.

5. Images and alt text

Multiple angles, and alt text that says what each shows. Agents that fetch a page reduce images to their alt text; agents that read a feed use the image link and the words around it.

6. Price, availability, shipping, returns

Kept current. Google's graph refreshes constantly and prefers live data; feeds accept updates as often as every few minutes. Shipping and return terms are the trust signals Shopify lists.

7. Identifiers

GTINs where they exist. Perplexity's program and Merchant Center both lean on them. Custom products are marked as custom, not left blank.

Categories, details, descriptions, alt text and SEO fields are what Fillwell fills; vendor, tag and title consistency is what it checks. Identifiers, price, shipping and images are yours, in the admin and the Google & YouTube channel.

where the pitch ends

Four things you will be sold, and the truth of each.

"You need a GEO app or a special feed for AI."

The doors above take the product data you already have. ChatGPT and Copilot read Shopify Catalog, which fills itself. Google's AI reads the Merchant Center feed you already run for Shopping. Perplexity takes that same feed. The work is the fields, not a new file.

"Write copy for the AI."

Assistants do not read marketing copy the way a shopper skims it. They match structured fields and quote plain descriptions. Answer the buyer's questions in the description and fill the fields; that is the whole technique.

"AI search rankings can be gamed."

Each agent ranks its own results and none publish the formula. What Shopify and Google both say is the same: complete, specific, current data is what gets matched. There is no lever beyond that on the merchant's side.

"Instant checkout inside the assistant is the goal."

In March 2026 OpenAI moved ChatGPT shopping away from its in-chat checkout toward discovery, with the purchase completed on the merchant's own store. Being found is the part that lasts; the checkout keeps moving.

Eight questions. The first no is the work.

The first two are settings you do once. The rest are product data, and they come back with every product you add.

Scan my store free

The free scan answers five for your whole catalog and six for a sample of images. The scan in the app answers three and four too.

ai ready

  • Is every product in Shopify Catalog? Title, at least one image, a price above zero, published.
  • Is the Google & YouTube channel installed and the feed free of disapprovals?
  • Does every product have the right category from Shopify's taxonomy?
  • Are the category's details filled, in the words a buyer would use?
  • Does the description answer what it is made of, who it is for, and how it is used?
  • Does every image have alt text that says what it shows?
  • Are price, stock, shipping and returns current and stated?
  • Do products that need one have a GTIN, or are they marked custom?

good to know

Common questions

What is AI search optimization, honestly?

Making sure the fields an assistant reads are filled, specific and current, and that your products are in the feeds the assistants read. There is no separate craft. The same category, details, title, description, images, price and identifiers that get you into Google Shopping and your own filters are what ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity read.

How do my products get into ChatGPT?

Through Shopify Catalog. Shopify says eligible products are included automatically and that ChatGPT and Copilot are the largest AI channels reading it. Inclusion does not guarantee placement; the agent ranks, and Shopify lists product data quality among the inputs.

And into Google's AI Mode and Gemini?

Through Merchant Center. Install the Google & YouTube channel, sync the feed, and clear disapprovals. Products with complete data are eligible for AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini shopping answers, including free listings.

And Perplexity?

Through its merchant program, which takes the same Google Shopping feed. Third-party guides report a verified domain and identifier coverage on most products as requirements; check Perplexity's own terms, since they change.

Does Shopify do this for me?

Catalog inclusion, yes, automatically. The fields, no. Shopify's advice on Catalog is a list of things to write: accurate titles, descriptions that answer buying questions, the right category, clean variants, useful images, current price and inventory. Somebody has to fill them, and Shopify does not tell you which products are missing what.

Where does Fillwell fit?

The fields. Its scan finds every product with a missing category, blank details, no description, blank alt text or a default SEO field, and its fills write them from the product's own text, and alt text from the image, for your approval. Its checks find vendors, tags and titles that are inconsistent. It also answers inside Shopify's Sidekick, so you can ask where your catalog is thin. It does not touch feeds, identifiers, prices or images.

How do I know if it is working?

Merchant Center reports whether products are approved and, in newer reports, how your brand shows in AI Mode. Shopify's Catalog page shows which products are eligible. Beyond that, ask the assistants for your product category and see whether you appear. There is no ranking report for ChatGPT or Perplexity today.

Primary sources: Shopify on Shopify Catalog, its help pages and requirements; Shopify on Google's AI shopping features; OpenAI on product discovery in ChatGPT; Google on product data quality violations; Perplexity's merchant program terms. you're in control

Approve each change, or bulk fill and undo anything.

AI can do this work. It shouldn't do it alone. Fillwell is built that way on purpose.

  • You guide it. Tell it what to do in plain words.
  • It skips when unsure. It never guesses into your live store.
  • You can undo anything. One row, one page, or all of it, for 30 days.

Your store. Your decision.
